They Sailed Lyrics

They Sailed

© Barry Sullivan & Charlie Ball

1) They left behind the worlds they knew with canvas sheets unfurledsailed
With wooden ships and nothing more, to the edges of the world
They sailed in search of glory, they sailed for unknown lands
They sailed for king and country, they sailed for all of man

Chorus
They Sailed across forbidding seas, They Sailed the prairies wide
They Sailed up o’er the mountains tall, They Sailed beyond the sky

2) No sooner did they land here but they started sailing west
On ships called prairie schooners on a single minded quest
Over hills and valleys and across the desert sand
They found that sailors sometimes drown with both feet on dry land

Chorus

3) They set us free from gravity with ships that sailed on air
That carried them above the land to wherever eagles dare
Mistakes were made and prices paid but that was always true
For rising to the challenge is what fearless sailors do

Chorus

4) They said goodbye to earth and sky and sailed out into space
Declaring to the heavens that there was a human race
Whose courage and whose vision helped them overcome the odds
In the endless human journey for the knowledge of the gods

Chorus

They Sailed across forbidding seas, They Sailed the prairies wide
They Sailed up o’er the mountains tall, They Sailed beyond the sky
Now on their ships they ride, On their ships they ride…
